The story of Just like a girl as a non-profit organization was first started by 15 yrs old Olivia Dey. Olivia was a victim of a bully during her grade school and had serious health issues. She started playing water polo when she was 12 years old. The game changed her life completely. But Olivia also faced lots of resistance due to the stereotypical mindset as a female player. Soon she became an advocate of female sports and started creating an opportunity for girls to play sports for free.
About the Volunteer Opportunity
Hooman and Pups Run is the First Annual Fundraising Event organized by Just Like a Girl. The event is organized to promote Healthy Lifestyle and Sports for Girls. Funds raised from this event will be used to run the Sports Based Mental Health Program in Scarborough.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for Canadians between the ages of 10 and 24. 61% of girls who used social media for more than five hours a day indicated moderate to serious psychological distress, compared with 33 percent of boys. Clearly, we are not doing enough to support youth with mental health challenges and disabilities in Canada. This needs to change. So Just Like a Girl has taken the initiative to help youth cope with the daily stress of life, bully, depression, etc. by getting involved in Sports.
We need your support to make this event a success. Your furry friends are also welcome to take part in the event.
