The mission of Adult Literacy Services is simple: Assist adults in improving their basic literacy skills, thereby empowering them to reach their full potential, create stronger families, and participate more fully in society.
Volunteer Opportunity
The adult literacy Math Tutor volunteer provides one-to-one tutoring to an adult improving their basic math skills and/or in preparation to pass the GED/HiSET Math exam. Sacramento Public Library is looking for patient tutors with strong math skills who want to share their love of math with those in need of help with basic math concepts and/or higher-level math skills. Specific topics may include fractions, decimals, pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry. The ability to teach math creatively and relate it in simple terms to everyday life is a bonus!
Consider being a tutor if you are 18 or older, able to read, speak English clearly and are willing to:
- Tutor at least once a week; attend one 4-hour tutor workshop for certification as an adult literacy tutor.
- Participate in one-hour workshops offered during the year to reinforce your tutoring skills.
After completing training, tutors volunteer their time for 1 to 2 hours at least once a week. Basic materials for tutor and learner are provided at no charge. Tutoring space is available at most library locations along with several other public sites. Literacy staff provides assistance and support as learners progress through the program.
